Conventions of a Music Video

Bastille - Things We Lost In The Fire

1) The artist was in the video throughout.

2) The song will be the soundtrack to the whole video, it also start and end when the music starts and ends.

3) The artist was lip-syncing throughout the video.

4) The artist was performing throughout the video.

5) The music video had three or more different locations, which changed every chorus/verse.

6) The costume changed throughout according to the setting he was in.

8) The video did follow a specific narrative.

9) The was a lot of camera movement as the artist moved around quite a lot.

10) When the artist was lip-syncing they usually used close ups, but when he acting around a lot they use mid-shots so that it didn't show his mouth much as he wasn't moving his mouth.

11) The video definitely had low and high angles. I think they used a high angle to create a powerful and dominant look.

12) There was a wide range of shot types/angles in each location.

13) The editing had been cut to the beat of the song.

14) Quite often a slow motion affect is used to create sexy or slick feel.

Music Video Conventions - Rap Music Genre

Music videos follow certain conventions. One convention used to make a successful video is that most of the time the artist are in their own clothes so that it doesn't look like they're showing off. This will also make the target audience respect them more.

There’s usually bright lighting and some form of bright object/costume in pop videos. This makes the video stand out more and also appeals to youth(the target audience), as it appears vibrant and lively, something young people are attracted to. It also makes it more upbeat, so it fits the beat and general message of the songs.

They stereotypically are associated with people in their teens as many people in their youth enjoy partying and clubbing and dancing, which is exactly what the purpose of pop music is for.

Another convention of Pop music is that within the music industry it tends to follow current trends rather than being independent and making something new, unique and different to hear. • The form the song normally follows a verse-chorus-verse structure and uses hook lines which are catchy therefore stays in the audiences mind.
